OUR HERITAGE

History of the Development & Founders

The inspiring journey of humanitarian medicine, democratic leadership, and selfless service since 1975.

Dr. Nani Guha
FOUNDER SECRETARY

Dr. Nani Guha

Renowned Physician & Freedom Fighter (1920–1991)

Born in Dhaka, young Nani Guha joined the freedom struggle, took part in the 1942 August movement, and organized relief during the 1943 Bengal famine while studying at Calcutta Medical College.

After higher medical qualifications in the UK (1948–1952), he declined lucrative foreign posts to serve Kolkata. In 1975, he founded The Calcutta Heart Clinic & Hospital Society at 5 Talbagan Row.

He pioneered affordable care where indoor patients received complete treatment, medicines, and pathology for just Rs 50 a day with profound human dignity.

Professor Sushil Kumar Mukherjee
VISIONARY SCIENTIST & PRESIDENT

Prof. Sushil Kumar Mukherjee

Eminent Scientist & Former President (Governing Body)

An internationally acclaimed scientist and humanist, Prof. Mukherjee took leadership of the Society in 1995 when it faced severe existential crisis after Dr. Guha's demise.

With rare scientific vision and ethics, he reorganized the hospital, built democratic solidarity among staff, and courageously thwarted hostile attacks.

He laid the foundation for the Salt Lake Hospital building expansion and envisioned Sister Nivedita Nursing Academy, firmly establishing Heart Clinic as a trusted healthcare pillar.

Architect of Salt Lake Campus & SNN Academy
Democratic Legacy

Established constitutional governance where medical decisions remain strictly democratic and free from commercial greed.

Universal Inclusivity

Every citizen—regardless of caste, religion, or economic background—receives first-class tertiary treatment.

Academic Expansion

Nurturing nursing education and scientific research through Sister Nivedita Academy and medical CME seminars.

CORE PHILOSOPHY

Founding Pillars & Ethical Credo

The fundamental humanitarian commitments laid down by Dr. Nani Guha and Prof. Sushil Kumar Mukherjee that guide every clinical decision today.

01

Non-Commercial Ethos

Healthcare must never be treated as a profit-making enterprise. Tariffs are structured strictly on actual cost-recovery principles, with zero surplus extracted for private enrichment.

02

Universal Door Policy

No patient arriving at our emergency or outpatient triage is turned away due to lack of funds. Generous concessional and free care mechanisms protect underprivileged families.

03

Scientific Rigor & EQAS

Affordable cost must never compromise clinical excellence. Diagnostic accuracy is continually validated through national EQAS programs with CMC Vellore and AIIMS New Delhi.

04

Democratic Governance

Governed democratically under the WB Societies Registration Act 1961 by eminent doctors, educators, and social scientists elected by general society members.

05

Humanitarian Outreach

Extending hospital capabilities beyond physical walls through free juvenile diabetic clinics, Pulse Polio immunizations, Sundarbans disaster relief camps, and mobile clinics.

50+

Years of Public Trust

Over 50 years of uninterrupted healing with more than 3.5 million patient consultations and hundreds of thousands of life-saving cardiac and critical interventions.

HISTORICAL GENESIS

Forged in the Spirit of the Freedom Struggle

The roots of The Calcutta Heart Clinic & Hospital Society were planted during India's national independence movement. Young medical students, inspired by self-reliance and social equality, believed true freedom meant emancipation from hunger, ignorance, and untreated disease.

Dr. Guha actively participated in the Quit India struggle while pursuing medical studies in Calcutta.

1943 Famine Relief

Organized emergency frontline medical and nutritional relief for thousands afflicted by the Great Bengal Famine.
